Race | Trophy Name | Ideal Start Time | Split | Details | Trophy Donor |
Galleon | Galleon | 1 Hour before LW | Cats & Dinghies | This is a traditional race around the South Margate Sands, normal sailing rules apply with the exception that competitors can drag their boats over the sand as long as they round the marks of the course. It is normal to lay a buoy on the far side of the sands to ensure that competitors do go round the sands and not sail round the South Margate buoy and down the inshore side of the sands. Marks used are the South Margate, a buoy laid on the seaward side of the sands and the West Marker Pole on the western end of the sands. The general idea is to sail the race at low water so the sands are exposed. Such things as taking a launching trolley on your boat to carry it across sand have all been done in the past; it is supposed to have an element of fun in it so anything goes. |

A resume of Eric ‘Mac’ Magee from Bill: A doctor's son who worked on the tools at the Austin Motor Co; not quite a founder member when he moved to Birchington and lived in a caravan at Court Mount on the Canterbury Rd; was safety Boatman and handyman for many years, he had only a Seagull Century Plus to maintain which drove an Orkney 14 foot Pine on Oak fishing boat, our only safety boat till the late 60’s. He ended his days at the Home by Westgate traffic lights. I think he was in his 90’s. Greater detail can be found in our 40th& 60th anniversary books. He introduced me to Hot milk and Rum on cold days which should be standard fare for the Brass Monkey and Icicle Tankard races. |
